This morning, Beethoven, 7 Variations in E flat major on 'Bei Mannern, welche Liebe fuhlen' from Die Zauberflote. Pablo Casals, cello, Alfred Cortot, piano, Jacques Thibaud, violin.

Very fine, Casals is particularly good. Wonderful sound for a 1927 recording!

(To celebrate this recording, the sun was out for 10 minutes this morning, then went away. This is the first sunshine we have seen in New York in 9 days, and the next 10 days are predicted to be the same rain and clouds. We are all going crazy here, as we are not British and not used to this. Is there any music that is known to drive away clouds and rain?)

How about "Arizona" by Mark Lindsey or "It Never Rains in Southern California." I guess these would only apply to the Southwest however. We haven't seen any clouds in weeks and weeks, Chaszz! We would love some of that beautiful rain you mentioned! Sometimes there can actually be too much sunshine, believe it or not!

We've had some rain here, but not for a week or so (Northern Utah). While it isn't as hot here as it is in the South we are still getting record breaking temperatures, today. In keeping with the topic, last night I listened to Dvorak's 1st Symphony.

Sorrano, next time you get rain, send some down here! We haven't seen it since December!! There was some kind of Beethoven weekend going on here a couple of days ago.
Piano Sonata#15 (Pastoral); Rage Over a Lost Penny (Opus 129); Choral Fantasy; Overture to Creatures of Prometheus; Piano Sonata#1 (Opus 2/#1); and culminating with an excellent recording of the 7th Symphony with a rousing ending! Just a wonderful time to listen to the radio. Enjoyed it immensely!

During the summers I'm glad I'm not down there. However, during the winters I wish I were. And it looks like things have dried up here again, too, so can't send any rain. Sorry.

I heard Berlioz' Beatrice and Benedict Overture last night.

Today it's the Seattle Chamber Music Festival Players performing Beethoven's String Quintet in C Major, Op. 29, written in 1801.
                        and
Chopin's Piano Concerto #2 with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra and pianist and conductor Christian Zacharias recorded from a Geneva performance.

The Deutsche Grammophon Complete Beethoven Edition Sampler.

I know there was some discussion about compilation/greatest hits type CD's, but this one is fantastic. It has a little of everything. To a lot of people only the first movement of the 5th Symphony and the adagio from Pathetique would be familiar. This one is great for turning on your friends.

All right, I confess again, I am listening to the whole cycle. A week at least of outstanding Chamber Music. ;-))
