I love Scott Joplin. I also love John Philip Sousa and Glenn Miller. So you can see that I am not just a classical and baroque music lover.

      1. Beethoven
      2. Bach (because of his piano music)
      3. Mozart
      4. Schubert
      5. Mendelssohn

      Today:
      1. Bruce Springsteen
      2. Mark Knopfler

Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Johnny Winter for non-classical.

I'm not into pop music these days; the only band I like a lot who might be included in that ( but are actually described as post rock)being difficult to define, and include classical elements into their music are Sigur Ros from Iceland.

              If we're doing pop:

              1. Billy Joel
              2. Queen
              3. The Beatles
              4. Elton John
              5. Styx

Kenny Loggins, Fleetwood Mac, and Simon and Garfunkel would be up there too.

Well the thread was meant to be about classical composers not pop musicians but it digressed....

Yes and I didn't help. Maybe we should have a non-classical favorites thread in the General Forum?

Done. See it in the General Forum.

Meanwhile, I can hardly wait for my CDs to arrive for the live Scandinavian performances of Handel's Israel in Egypt and Messiah.

No 1 is not available, it always has been and will be Beethoven.
No. 2 in my list is Mahler, I am surprised he's nowhere in the lists before.
Then it becomes a bit fuzzy, but one I always favour is Prokofiev.
JS Bach cannot be anywhere else but in a list like this.
And just for a treat: why not mention Sibelius?

Yes, I would have to add Sibelius to my list. It's a good thing I cannot count, as then I would have too many on the list.

                            There is only one Beethoven!

Don't like Mahler, quite like Prokofiev- the Romeo and Juliet music is good- seen that played live a few months ago. Sibelius- don't mind him either- saw some of his live a couple of weeks ago. Bach- not really into him that much.
My number two remains a tie with Chopin and Rachmaninoff!

Now let's extend it to a top ten!

                            Mine:

                            Ludwig van Beethoven
Frederic Chopin/Sergei Rachmaninoff - joint second
                            Clara and Robert Schumann
                            Franz Schubert
                            John Field
                            Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
                            Claude Debussy
                            Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
                            Joseph Haydn
                            Johannes Brahms
