Details of this year's BBC Proms have been issued on their website and, I believe, for the first time in its history, Beethoven's Ninth is being performed twice - first on opening night, 13th July and again on 30th August. The first performance is by the BBC Symphony, cond. Jiri Belohlavek and the second by the Bavarian Radio SO, cond. Mariss Jansons.
I wonder is this because the Ninth had to be cancelled last year due to a fire?
The result is that this year, the symphony has been shifted from its customary place. i.e. the penultimate night of the Proms. Long before that, it used to be the last night until the flag wavers and the "Rule Brittannias" took over.
Which reminds me: strangely enough, there is not an awful lot of Elgar in his centenary year, and Mozart has been drastically cut back.
