    Xmas menu 2013

    Living on the continent as I do, the 24th (evening) is celebrated more so the the 25th, so all the fine nosh and present-opening is done then. Still, being a Brit (a wavering agnostic/atheist, depending on how panicked I'm feeling), I always insist my family undergo the trials and tribulations of the real Christmas day. Besides, that means we get to eat fine nosh twice in under 24 hours!
    I had planned to cook pheasant breasts (with red cabbage, croquette potatoes and rich red-wine sauce), but because I've been too busy I forgot to place my order for the pheasant breasts in time and so can't have them! My partner (organized and Germanic) told me repeatedly to 'get my act together', but to no avail. She, of course, has done all her Xmas shopping (food and presents) and is smirking smugly as she plans her next march into Poland.
    So, falling back to my 'default menu setting' I'll be cooking Beef Wellington as the main dish, with King Prawns with spicy coriander and chilli salad as the entrée. Wine: Chablis with the prawns, a Médoc with the beef. For the dessert and cheese, we'll see how it goes ...

    What are you guys and girls cooking?

    Traditionally my family usually has a baked ham with potatoes, gravy, vegetables, and salads. Desserts range from pies to fudge and other candies. No wine, though but there might be a bit of whine.

    For the next few days, if the weather cooperates, I will be away and will not have access to Internet (or limited). I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

      Don't worry Sorrano, we'll be having both wine and whine. Xmas time with families is always stressful in some way or other. If you're going to be away, I'll wish you now a Merry Christmas in advance and a prosperous and healthy New Year.

          Excellent no turkey! How nice to see others breaking away from the UK tradition (I know in the US turkey is not your usual xmas fodder and it's your thanksgiving dish)- I've already had two xmas turkey lunches this month and I've no intention of another on the 25th. Fillet of beef is on the menu for the big day with plenty of wine and a humble but delicious M&S apple pie to replace the awful stodginess that passes for xmas pud!

            In days past we used to have carrot pudding with a caramel sauce (no rum sauce, sorry). Since those days I've taken it upon myself to make it a couple of times and do enjoy that. Until Wednesday I should be away, depending upon weather (it's looking a bit threatening in the next few days).

              Celery sticks with cheese while we wait for everything to be ready. Ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, pumpkin pie. apple cider.

                      You've got a nice menu there I see, Megan. In light of it, I've modified mine:
                      Entrée: King Viola da Gamba prawns;
                      Main dish : Beethoven Beef Battle of Wellington.

                          Start with spinach salad, with vegetables (bell pepper, cucumber, tomato, etc.). Then shrimp and grits, with the shrimp being sauted, with the grits being fried and with garlic, with a gouda cheese sauce to cover it. Then vanilla bean ice cream with a strawberry liquor to cover it, with a butter crisp wafer on the side.

                          And plenty of cocktails, wine, beer, etc. There is a full bar where we celebrate - why not get a really good buzz!

                              Today here in Vienna, Austria, we will be making our way through the millions doing their Xmas Eve shopping at our nearby Interspar (which by the way is only opened until 14:00 today). We will be having the traditional Austrian Xmas Eve meal which is fish (cod) with my husband's special potato salad (which is nothing like American potato salad). Then later on we are going to have Fondue with soup (not cheese) along with either chicken or turkey chunks as well as bread (baguette) pieces to cook in the soup. Then we will have perhaps 3 different sauces for dipping the cooked meat and bread pieces into. Hopefully it will all turn out fine since we are both pretty ill. I have had this bad cold for almost two weeks (my husband for about one week) plus I have been suffering with bacterial conjunctivitis in both eyes for the last week now. Neither the daily coughing up of a lung or my double barrelled pink eyes seem to be getting any better so we shall see if I get my Xmas wish, which is to be rid of these earthly ailments before the New Year.



                              Anyway, I hope you all have a lovely Xmas and a Happy New Year 2013.
