Amsterdam, days of LvB and VvG

my own notes on current adventure..

like a pilgrim on a mission, from the Van Gogh Museum across the Museumplein while hearing

    froh wie seine Sonnen fliegen
    froh wie seine Sonnen fliegen
    durch des Himmels prächt’gen Plan.
    Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
    Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn
freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen,
    wie ein Held zum Siegen
    Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn
    wie ein Held zum Siegen
freudig freudig wie ein Held zum Siegen.
    wie ein Held zum Siegen!
    wie ein Held zum Siegen!
    wie ein Held zum Siegen!

    naturlich Furtwangler. (1951)

the Museumplein would be a great venue to stage my play about VvG.

A great combination - two famous Vans - each with ear problems.

from my limited experience, Disney in LA, Kennedy Center in DC and Pittsburgh I can say that Concertgebouw has the best acoustics for symphony I've ever heard. It was quite simply incredible even in my cheap seat, I could hear every note from each instrument. During the pauses, you could tell where each cough came from in full surround sound.

I cannot more highly recommend this hall.

I talked with a Dutch woman in english, dutch and french beforehand and it seems they think this is Haitink's farewell tour. He's 82? 83? At the end, he was given 3 rounds of applause.

The performance was technically good but seemed to lack emotion from Haitink. Maybe he's just done the material too many times and the creative tank is empty. He didn't phone it in but it lacked passion.

well, Haitink is definitely too tired and time to retire. i could tell from the intro of the 9th.

the 9th is a piece everyone should experience while still vertical.
