    Chromatic Scales

On practicing 3 finger chromatic scales, is it ok to start on a C with the second finger, or should I start with the thumb?

Is it more beneficial to practice 4 finger chromatic scales rather than 3?

I start with a thumb, but I don't think it of great significance - more important is the position of the hand and the thumb and finger playing close together. The 4 finger scale is a more advanced fingering and suitable for certain passages.
