    Linguistic doubt.

    I know this is not a dictionary/grammatic forum site, but people in sites of that type, ... well, there are people who know, and a great many who do not. What if I say

    (a) "I think this thread answers in full the two questions that gave it rise".

    I know
    (b) "I think this thread answers in full the two questions that gave rise to it"

    is correct English. As to (a), I get confused. So, question: Is there anything wrong with (a)?

    I would say b. is correct

    The point about a. is that it contains no direction. You can probably work out that it refers to the thread, but you need to link that reference with the 'it', and if you say to it, you are pointing to the thread that caused it.
