a new guitar...

i haven't had an electric guitar for 8 years - i've been having to borrow other people's. i primarily play guitar, though i still suck. anyway, here is a picture of my new epiphone les paul - vintage sunburst standard top. just wanted to share.

also, i've talked with a lot of you for many years so now i finally reveal myself, in photo. unfortunately i recently shaved my beard though it will be back as will my hair be long, lol. i'm the younger person on the left (when facing the picture).

also, here is an audio file of my just playing around on the guitar - don't expect anything special - but just wanted to share. just e-min and a maj. major towards the end - like the last 3 minutes. also, please forgive the sound of the amp - it sounds like crap to my ears, not really what i like.

Nice guitar, Preston! I haven't pulled mine out in quite a while - will have to do so soon.

Nice photo Preston. I did listen to your audio file and you do sound quite confident playing it.
I'm middle aged and much prefer the sound of violin or piano though.
I do remember when in my 30's I went to pop gig , where I knew the young guitarist and was really impressed by his virtuosity and technique.
And I must say Hendrix was pretty talented too, but also self destructive.
I used to like Brian May also.
How our tastes change as we get older, thankfully!

Ha, well mine looks just like the original. I kind of wish I'd gone with the all-black, but an original-looking one will probably be better if I'm ever forced to join a Queen tribute band to support myself

Thanks Peter - I hope so. I decided to post the photo after much contemplating! I was unsure about putting a picture of myself up, but then just, well I don't know - just did, .

Thanks Chris, I really like the style of it - now I need to learn how to play a Les Paul, well actually an electric guitar, at least properly!!!

Chris - "Pick up your guitar and play just like yesterday." Think that is from a song?

Overly confident, imo. I guess that once I start playing and start wailing on it - I get a little too carried away.

Megan, keep in mind the electric guitar is a beautiful instrument, such as there are all types of sounds that can come from it - not just distorted rubbish (which is what I played, ). You can make an electric have the most beautiful tones, the most glorious harmonies, etc. and all of that in different sound.

I do apologize for the over-the-top rock but I am hoping to change that and be able to play beautiful tones, beautiful melodies building and building upon each other, etc. It will just take some work.

Another thing about the electric is when played right it can "cry" - and cry the most beautiful tones.

Megan have you ever heard the shakuhachi?

And to the guitarists whose guitar is in the closet (Chris, ) - ROCK ON! Seriously let the rock out, nothing wrong with that every now and again - Beethoven sure did, that's for sure, lol!!!

The Japanese flute? Yes Preston, It's quite nice to listen to, depends on the piece of music playing.

First, thanks again for the replies. Megan, I can tell you know more of the shakuhachi than I.

I am seeing now that I have no real ear, if an ear at all, for music - I have no touch, no feelings, no emotions, etc. Much like in life. Right now, I feel in thought and feeling - realism, which is how I am able to see and understand these things. Having the lack of feeling I often times do - is madness, hence my signature.

I dream of how great music must be - to be felt so deeply and powerfully, etc. - though, I can not feel it at all, in a sense.

Humbug! you are too self critical.

You contradict yourself at times Preston. In your last post you said:-

''keep in mind the electric guitar is a beautiful instrument, such as there are all types of sounds that can come from it - not just distorted rubbish (which is what I played, ). You mean like feeling and emotion, something you said you are bereft of.

If I may say Preston, you need to get off the roller coaster ride of your emotions. Music, as we all know on this site can bring a great and a deep sense of healing and peace.
When you feel the way you do, try listening to your favourite , classical or otherwise and let the music take over. T.S. Eliot once wrote about this, he said, when you listen to music very deeply , or if it touches your very soul, let it take over, then for as long as the music is playing , you are the music, and the music is you.
It's all about a feeling of oneness and unity , the English romantic poets like Wordsworth, Byron etc.. were always talking about.

Thank you for the kind words Megan. Though, the problem is I know what a musical ear is like because I have felt it - but only rarely, and then I lose it - so in short I have no ear, and that is the bottom line - and it hurts me.

here is a little something less minor. in fact, it is the opposite. still has a amp sound that i do not like. i am working with guitar rig 4 demo and am just learning it, in a sense, so bare with me. a lot of changes throughout this improv so if you are interested try to listen to the whole thing - really just running through the g-maj scale a lot though.

also, i know these pieces have been distorted, though soon i will fiddle with some e-maj and a much cleaner better sound. i think that will be much more pleasing because it will be much more pleasant, well it is at least to my ears.

again though, seriously please forgive the sound of the guitar (amp) - it is terrible - almost like just noise.

                          just messing around:

Also, Chris and Megan, y'all got me in the mood for some Queen...

... nice booming and rocking performance!

Though, thank the divine powers for feelings of spirituality, philosophical thought, etc. etc. etc. - in music!!! In other words, I can only take so much rock.

On Hendrix, he was quite a talent, and a talented writer/composer, and it is a shame what happened to him - though, Megan in truth, I do believe you are right - he was too wild for himself.

Also talking about all this rock, I remember when someone I know was taking piano years ago and I asked them to learn November Rain by Guns N' Roses, they said they would show it to their teacher, who was devoutly into strictly classical, etc. Anyway, we were young at the time (12 or 13 or so) and they brought the song to their teacher - her comments were, "it is simply breathtaking, beautiful, etc." - the teacher was shocked by the beauty of the song! And most likely the use of orchestra and the instrumentation. I always get a kick out of that story.
