In taking a brief look at the article I can get excited about the Brilliant Edition of Haydn's works as I begin to explore his symphonic development. These do not surprise me, but I do think others could have been mentioned. Berlioz's own Symphonie Fantastique was ground breaking, but I'm not sure if it had as much influence as some of the others mentioned. Schubert's "Great" Symphony, had it been premiered earlier would have had a much more profound influence with that heavy brass orchestration.
Thanks, Philip, that provided some food for thought.
I noticed that! The way in which the last three symphonies are discussed do not cover much of their actual influence on music but seem to be rather a preference of the author. I think the first two had a much more more profound effect on the world of music.
