    Classical Christmas Music

Anyone have any good suggestions for some good classical christmas songs. I am in desperate need of a new playlist around the house this holiday season. I'm over the traditional boring Jingle Bells, etc songs. Let me know if anyone has any good suggestions for some new tunes. Cheers!

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's Christmas album is a delight.

What's wrong with "Jingle Bells"? I hate boasting, but I can play it on the harmonica.
I must have about a dozen CDs of obscure Christmas music due to the fact that the BBC Music Magazine always include a Christmas "classical" CD in their December isssue. They feature composers and pieces I have never heard before. I always dig one or two out when the time comes.

The current edition - which should be on sale now - includes a free disc of choral Christmas music.

If you are not familiar with it, you might want to look at Handel's Messiah? There have been many religious classical composers who wrote works of great depth based on Christianity.

Also, Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus would probably be good.

I don't know if it's very Christmasy, but "Ave Verum Corpus" (Hail True Body) must rank as one of the most beautiful pieces ever written. By anyone. Even himself!

Well, I agree it is not Christmasy. Though, I was under the impression the starter of this thread was wanting to get away from the typical Christmas music and look more into the true meaning behind Christmas and do so with music? So, that is the reason I would recommend he look into the masses, oratorios, etc. - sacred music. I think, Christmas has turned into too much of a "holiday" for many and the true nature of Christmas, the birth of Christ, has been forgotten for new toys, gifts, presents, etc. So, sacred music might not be a bad idea?

You are quite right, Preston. Our patron didn't write any Christmas music -although he was born on 16th December. However, his two settings of the "Gloria" could be squeezed into the category, I think.

Thanks Roehre, lovely selection , you have mentioned a few that I also had in mind.
The besides Bach and Berlioz, Saint-Saens is particularly lovely too.
