The Life of Alice Herz-Sommer, The Garden of Eden in Hell.

A Brilliant heartwarming story of the most terrible adversity it is possible to imagine.
For this deals with one of the darkest episodes in recent history, the rise of the Nazi's and the effects of their genocidal policies. This wonderful lady, who has now reached the grand old age of 108, grew up what became absorbed into the Nazi empire that is Prague.
She and her son survived the extermintation camps and describes the horrors and sufferings that Jewish people and others went through.
I found it quite chilling to read the depths of human evil by the SS. there were some passages in the book that made me pause with emotion at the atrocities committed on these innocent people, I had to put book down briefly in order for it to sink in. There have been many accounts of this period, but I did find this particularly moving and thought provoking.
I especially enjoyed Alice Herz knowledgable interpretations of Chopin's Etudes and her career as a concert pianist.

By the way, how do you ask for oranges when you go to the market: give me two pounds of oranges or give me one kilogram of oranges? I've been reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_...mer_industries and it is very interesting. It seems that Great Britain had no remedy but to adopt metrification because of the EU.

Weights are in Kilograms, but we're not consistent - I still think in pounds as I'm sure many people over 50 do! Another example is we still have the mile and do not use kilometres, but we have metres - typical British logic!

Even funnier is the article "Metrication in the United States". In 2019 Hawaii shall be the first state to introduce the metric system.

Alice is a wonderful gifted lady in so many ways, I didn't realize she is now 110.

Unfortunately, I can't find the DVD on Amazon. I would like to purchase it if I can.

I haven't seen the Lady in no.6 as I don't think its been released on DVD here, but it inevitably must be going over the same ground. I know it's a shorter documentary than the first one which was made by the excellent Christopher Nupen - you can see more of his music documentaries (many have already been shown on BBC) here - http://www.allegrofilms.com/films/
