Hummm... Why should it lie under the hills in particular? And what is a "start" anyway. A beginning?

The Riddle is from the Hobbit.

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
      And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
      Ends life, kills laughter.

Enrique, the word is 'stars' not 'starts'

It all makes perfect sense to me.

Hope everyone is having a good day (or had one-depending on which side of the globe you're on....)

Oh, sorry about that, I got it from a friend in Canada. It's from Saturday Night Live, a sketch about the first performance of the 9th symphony. Maybe it's not available in America because it would violate the copyright laws there?

No worries. I figured, as well, that it might be for that reason.

A little "period-instruments humor" for the holidays...

I only now discovered this thread. Lots of juicy take-no-prisoners humor here, not for the easily bruised. In contrast, I offer this uplifting link of spiritual nature, appropriate to the holiday season. (It's rather monothematic but give it time. It'll grow on you...or not.)

A favorite quote by Sir Thomas Beecham, directed toward a female cellist not performing to his expectations:
“Madam, you have between your legs an instrument capable of giving pleasure to thousands – and all you can do is scratch it.”

Talking of sprouts, a woman goes to see her doctor for a regular check-up. The doc asks the lady to strip to her undies and notices with alarm what seems to be lettuce poking out around her knickers. Noticing the doc's alarm, she asks ...
Woman : Is it serious, Doc?
Doctor : Well, it could just be the tip of an iceberg.
