So sorry to be so unbelievably thick about this but in trying to reply to bernhard I don't seem to understand how to select part of his message to quote,if I highlight it and then click it delivers me to the forum again .I'm so confused!!!could you explain?

On a post, right next to the date and time, there are four icons. The one on the right will do this automatically for you. You can then delete the text you want to leave out of the quote. If you want to quote multiple passages with your own text in between, you can just copy and paste the code from the beginning and the delete the various parts in the various copies. Of course, you can always quote manually - the faq (there's a link to that under the Post New Topic button) should explain this.
