WAS BEETHOVEN BLACK?
I have been told that one of Beethoven's parents was black but can find no reference to this anywhere. As a teacher celebrating Black History Month I'd be delighted to discover this was true but would also like to find such information in print. A picture demonstrating his racial heritage would be fantastic. Can anyone help?

No, he was not black. By using the search feature of this forum, you will find some longer discussion of the issue (i.e. why somebody might think that, the reasons why we do not believe it to be so, etc.). Beethoven's family tree can be found on the main website ( http://www.kingsbarn.freeserve.co.uk/family%20tree.html ). More extensive information on his family can be found in books or possibly elsewhere on the Internet.

As a teacher you should know better not to make such an issue purely on the grounds of a persons race. Does the fact that Beethoven was most definitely 100% Caucasian now render the man less in your eyes? Such policy works against racial integration, and indeed could be construed by some (ie me) as racist in itself.Originally posted by GILL:
