I have a question about old Steinways or other well knows makes . Do they lose their quality of sound and after say 50 or 100 years, are they worth being restored if possible?

Firstly no two Steinways or Bechsteins are alike and it will very much depend on the particular model and instrument. In general, yes older Steinways, Bechsteins, Bluthners and Bosendorfers are worth restoring (particularly from the 20's and 30's). I have a Bechstein grand from 1895 which has a lovely walnut case and a beautiful tone as it was very sympathetically restored and retains the original soundboard which I think is crucial. Beware of over restoration as you end up with a virtual new instrument that has nothing in common with its original sound or even the make it's supposed to be! I would always advise getting the advice of a reputable piano tuner.'Man know thyself'
