I stopped watching 15 minutes in because of the pretentious 'cinema verite' hand-held camera style, the dog eating off the floor of Frederick the Great's bedroom and when he slapped his sister.

It immediately reminded me of that execrable film made in the 1980s about the last years of Schubert, "With My Hot Tears" - accompanied by grunting, sweating, swearing and other gratuitous bodily functions - specifically designed to signal "art house"!! But more reminiscent of that other house!!!

It's a symbol of our degraded times and morally corrupt society I'm afraid. Everything is brought to the lowest common denominator - so that everybody can feel better about themselves no matter how close to the bottom they reside.

I prefer to think of Bach as the bold, outspoken and somewhat rebellious man of the Lutheran tradition, a husband and father - who wrote music for the millennia and who experienced all the depredations of the capricious life that we all do. And more.

Not only that, but one of the greatest minds in human history.

For what it's worth, Frederick the Great was regarded as a philanthropic king - not a domestic violence practitioner. You can see potatoes left on his grave at Sans Souci (Potsdam) in honour of all those he helped out of poverty. He was also a fantastic musician and composer himself.

You find it a disgusting movie? Gosh, that's a strong reaction to what is evidently a film based on speculation and intended as entertainment. I treat it in the same exact way as I did with Milos Forman's Amadeus - a beutifully produced piece of enjoyable nonsense.

I agreed! Totally! I think this new generation will not have any cultural revolution. They don't want to create something beautiful, those people want to pervert the world around them!
