    Maxim and Beethoven

I would love it if Maxim Vengerov, perhaps one of the best violinists of his generation, would do some Beethoven stuff!
He has done a movement to B's "Spring" sonata, as well as the Kreutzer, but I would love to see him tackle the violin sonatas or the violin concerto. What do you all think?

I've never heard of this chap.

He is a phenomenal talent, but I have only heard in Romantic repertoire.

You're right, Peter. While Vengerov has performed Beethoven, Mozart and Bach, his discography is mostly Romantic.

I have only 1 disk of his, performance is Prokofiev #1 & Shostakovich Concertos, splendid technique and true feeling for the music (fellow Russians?). He is reminiscent of David Oistrakh only the sound from those times didn't do justice to the talent he had. I for one would love to see him tackle some 'real music'. Given the number of inferior talents who have tackled B already, he would certainly be an improvement on them!

            For Beethoven1,

Here's a link to Tower Records site.
Vengerov recorded the complete "Spring" and "Kreutzer" sonatas.
I don't like his playing that much.
I have a CD with Szeryng playing these sonatas. I like it a lot.
I also like Oistrach & Oborin performance of the "Spring" sonata.

Here's the link, maybe it can help you:

Thanks m! What is it about Vengerov that you don't care for?

Sorry but I don't really remember what exactly it was (in his playing) that I didn't like.

It has been a long time since the last time I listened to him playing in a concert.
I can just say that he "didn't touch" my soul.

I have only one cd with him, Dvorak's Violin Concerto in A with Kurt Masur and the New York Philarmonic. Loved it... but I don't think he has the touch of Beethoven, his is too dark and heavy, more suitable to that concerto than Beethoven's.
