Last night driving home I heard the last two movements of a Symphony in G by Michael Haydn, brother of Joseph. I thought they were quite original and good. Before the announcer identified the piece I was thinking Mozart or J. Haydn but a little bit of new untrammelled territory. Has anyone else ever enjoyed work by this composer?

Johann Michael Haydn is another one of those not so often heard of composers like Salieri.
I used to have a CD of Michael Haydn's symphonies #19,21,22,23,26,29,30,37,39 and 41. Unfortunately it got lost in transit (along with about 40 other CDs)that were being shipped to me from the states. I enjoy his music but you don't come across it too often.
Living here in Vienna,Austria you would think that his music would be performed but it's not. Naturally his brother Franz Josef's music is celebrated in the concerts halls here. It's unfortunate but true. So the next best thing is to find his music on CDs and enjoy...

My classical radio station plays his music sometimes and I do enjoy his works, especially some of his organ compositions. You're right some of his stuff does sound like his older brother. He took Mozart's place at Salzburg as director of the Archbishop's orchestra. If you want to read more there's an interesting short bio of him

I once sung his Requiem in C minor with a chorus here, it really was beautiful, and I really enjoyed it. I really think that this was the golden age of classical music (Mozart,Salieri, both Haydns, Weber,Schubert and of course Beethoven).
We should hear more of him, although it's really hard to find anything of his on cds."Wer ein holdes Weib errungen..."
"My religion is the one in which Haydn is pope." - by me .

Could this have been Mozart's symphony no.37 in G K.444? Mozart wrote the adagio introduction and the whole work was once thought to be by him, but now known to have been written by Michael Haydn.

In times past I've sung some of his small choral works and really enjoyed them. I think his choral writing is superb.
