Piano sonatas

Is Schnabel a good piano performer of Beethoven's sonatas or not? Or do people prefer the more romantic touch of Emil Gilels?

To many, Schnabel is the Beethoven piano sonatas! I wouldn't go that far, but he was a very fine musician and for pianists, his editions of the sonatas are well worth getting hold of.
