Book "Beethoven Remembered"

I just saw a rather good but cryptic review written about this book. I think the review must have been written by someone who does not speak English as a first language.

At any rate he says it is good and is apparantly written by Wiegler and Ries in mid 19th cent. Wiegler was the doctor who treated Beethovens hearing and Ries was a musician and friend. It sounds as though it is only recently available in English and is a good neutral telling of Beethovens story, neither hyper-critical nor warm and gushing.

I any of what I have said here true and if you have read this book what is your opinion ?

I had this book in English about 10 years ago, but lost it 'in transit'. It's difficult to find these days in England, but I'd recommend any contemporary account of Beethoven.

I read this book last year. It is neither hyper-critical nor the opposite so you are right in assuming that. There's a very interesting foreword by Christopher Hogwood and introducton by Eva Badura-Skoda. It pays close attention to B's everyday life. Also, try to get Memories of Beethoven by Gerhard von Breuning (Stephen von Breuning's son), another good book by someone who knew him. Personally I like reading books written by people who knew him.
Steve, try your local library that's where I found these books.

I have the chance to have the "Notices Biographiques L.v. BEETHOVEN par F.G. WEGELER et F. RIES" in an edition (french, translation of A.F: LEGENTIL) very rare : 1862. I know for sure there is an edition in english...
The MEMORIES OF BEETHOVEN by Gerhard von BREUNING (Aus der Schwarzpanierhaus) are indispensable for any B.'s admirer.
I suggest also the "BEETHOVEN", Impressions by his contemporaries... an incredible amount of testimonies (Dover 0.486.21770.1) Do not miss those books !

Another interesting book is the Recent Music and Musicians by Moscheles. He talks quite a bit about Beethoven and his contemporaries. I don't know if the book is even in print; my copy was published in 1873 in English. It was one of those things I just happened to run across and picked it up very, very cheap.
