    Beethoven Festival in Bonn!

I read an article concerning the Beethoven Festival that Rutradelusasa was asking about. It's held annually from Sept. 25-Oct.10. It started back in 1845 for the celebration of the unveiling of the Beethoven's monument. Musicians from all around the world will perform such works as Missa Solemnis; the Violin Concerto; his early Sonatas (Opus 10 & 13); & Christ on the Mount of Olives will also be performed.
Also, they're asking for donations to carry on the Festival due to the city's budgetary constrictions it might not go on for many more years. The Arts are in financial struggles all over the world.
Anyway, I hope this information helps!!

Budgetary restrictions!!!??? Thank God London is not the only disgrace to the name of music. If Bonn cannot spare a few Euros in the name of Beethoven what the hell else does it spend its money on??? Why the hell would anyone want to go there if it were not for Beethoven's birthplace????

Exactly!! And, no, I don't think London is the only disgrace it seems like other cities
are as well. I don't know what's going on with the art and cultural world financially but it doesn't look good!! And, you're right, I wouldn't want to go to Bonn for any other reason than to see Beethoven sites either!

I have to say Beethoven's birthplace was the only thing that induced my parents to take the Bonn exit off the autobahn - amazingly we found the Bonngasse with no difficulties as it was close to the exit we had taken - my heart sank when we found the house closed - can you imagine?! Fortunately it was only for lunch!

How disappointing! I can imagine how you must have felt when you saw the house closed. I wonder if it's as easy to find now with all the changes and growth that happens to big cities!

The lack of money is for the Festival... The Beethoven-Haus will never have trouble because, now as BONN is not anymore the capital city in Germany (the politics are now based in Berlin...)BONN need BEETHOVEN more than ever to exist.
BONN is extended, but once you are in in the center you find the house very easily.

Three years ago the actual LordMaire made her campaign with the slogan "Bonn on the move"... She put B.'s portrait with hers on the poster and it was written "A strong mind for Bonn" : she won.

They have printed also a lot of things with the BEETHOVEN's statue, naturally reworked by computer : so you see Beethoven on rollers, on a bicycle, taking a bus, with shopping bags...etc, etc...

I do not think the Festival will go down... Many artists will play gratis to keep it safe !...

It would help if they concentrated on Beethoven at the festival! I noticed how little his music featured in the so-called Beethoven festival!

I'm sure it would not be difficult for the City to sponsor the Festival as well as the Beethoven-Haus. Though if, as Peter says, they do not play much Beethoven at the Festival, then the Festival deserves nothing. For once Londoners heard some free Beethoven yesterday, thanks to the Queen Mother's demise. They played the complete funeral march from op26 during the prosession as it passed the war memorial - very effective it was too. At last she served me a purpose in death that she never did in life.

I don't mean to brag, But New Zelads Prime-Minister, Her Honourable Helen Clarke gave am extra m million (us aprx 1.3 million and about 900,000 pounds) into the Arts budget, which is then distrubuted around the whole of New Zealand. That may not sound like much, but to a population that DEPENDS on tourism and exports of meat, that is quite substantial!

However, that does not make the situation perfect! I agree that the Arts are not as recognised all over the world as we here at this forum would like! I would like to see more money spent on tertiary education. And in New Zealand, student loans can hinder a person financial record for most of their life if they are unable to find a decent job after University!

It is sad and unfortunate, but then, if you took my family for example, if more moeny was proceeded towards the arts, then you would have to take the money from somewhere else, and that would make my family moan due to the fact that it would probably be taken out of a department that THEY find to be more important, ie Roads, Government spendature etc! And although I do find them important, I think that how much money that is put into the arts needs to be addressed! And even in New Zealand! Because $3,000,000 (NZ) is not very much if you don't know how long for!!!

It is a hard subject to compare with in some respects when I live so far away, and the situation (at the moment) is not quite as umm...Neglected as other countries! Whats' the U.S.As' situation like on the Arts funding? Can anyone tell me, it would be quite interesting to compare it to Canada!

Might loose a bit of sleep over this one guys!

Believe me, a lot of members of the BEETHOVEN-HAUS are telling the same thing ! The EUROPAISCHES MUSIKFEST IN STUTTGART (25 august - 8 september) took BEETHOVEN as thema this year. They are really doing a lot of BEETHOVEN (Missa solemnis, 9 symphonies, trios, concertos, quatuors, Fidelio...) they put a little bit of BACH, MOZART, SCHUBERT... and REGER ! Why REGER ? But it is just a little part of one concert.
