This opinion is not an unconsidered one Peter. I listened to 'Rach 3' last night on the radio - the word tiresome is wholely appropriate to Rachmaninov, and this was one of his show pieces!. I can go on and give you dozens of other examples if you wish. Of course I could say the majority of music contemporary with Beethoven could also be described as tiresome, because this also happens to be the case, as you well know.

I prefer the Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini to the 3rd!

Funny, I also heard Rach.#3 couple of nights back on a tape I rented of Vladimir Horowitz
in Moscow. He also played Chopin's Polonaise Op. 53 which was very good. No Beethoven though. I also prefer Rhap on a theme of Pagini. (not that I want to get in the middle of this or anything).

Dare I suggest, Joy, the appeal of the Paganini Rhap to due more to the skills of Paganini than 'Rach' (not that that's saying much)?

I think 'Rach' had some reservations about the work himself. I think anyone could have made a catchy piece out of this theme.
