    And then in the 5th Symphony I always feel cheated when the conductor does NOT take the repeats.

      Depends what you want, really. Whatever 'technical' musical arguments there may be for or against any particular repetition, I think that it is the composer's privilege to decide how his composition should sound. Sure, we can make changes to that and decide it sounds better differently, but if Beethoven put the repetition in there, he must have had a good reason (whatever that may be). We may not understand it, true. We may not even like it. But that is what he left us and what's more, Beethoven is known to have been someone who worked and re-worked his compositions until he was satisfied. So, I'll stick with the original.
      Also, I would not think of messing around with any other artist's creation. Music is different, I know, but still....
