Last night I listened to (watched a DVD) the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado performing Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony.. The performance was both visually and aurally stunning.

Is this the correct tempo played for Ecossiase in E flat. Wo0 83 ? It does seem very fast.

'Correct tempo' is rather ambiguous, after all you can always hear differences in tempi by various artists in all pieces, it's more a case of does it work musically and I think it does in this case. Incidentally here is a recording by Wilhelm Kempff which comes in at a second quicker!

Thank you Peter..... I seem to love this pace.

It's such a lovely joyful piece.

Yes, less Handel in the Strand and more like Beethoven in the Prater!

Yes, the instruction "clatteringly" sounds more like the Prater Wheel turning than an Andante walkl!! I've done both - many times!

Since my childhood, this has been one of the most beautiful arias I know, Together with 2 arias from Arabella (Strauss) the most beautiful since Puccini... Too bad that Korngold didn't do more like this...

Haven't listened to this one in a while. Stumbled across this noteworthy bit:
Butt bravely resolves to use the same forces Handel had at his disposal in Dublin, which means that the entire oratorio is sung by a dozen singers (with all soloists required to participate in the choruses, as Handel would have expected).
It is the 24th review down this list (just CTRL-f and search Messiah):

                      Excellent recording!

The beautiful piece he plays towards the end is Chopin Nocturne Op.55/2 in Eb. Here it is played by Rubinstein.
