Schubert's music is absolutely marvelous. It's a pity he died so young.

No indeed, but there are so many that I thought best to start with the works I mentioned. The Eb Mass is also glorious and there is some fine music in the opera 'Fierrabras' and incidental music to Rosamunde.

Incidentally, Liszt's piano transcriptions of the songs are well worth hearing.

There's a great live recording of Horowitz playing the Liszt transcription of Schubert's Serenade.

Speaking of Schubert, the last three impromptus were playing on the radio this morning when I got up. Those are exquisite!

For some lovely English pastoral music by the much neglected Gerald Finzi, the Romance Op.11

Ah, that is lovely music. I'm not sure I had even heard of Gerald Finzi. Thanks for that, Peter.

Ah glad to have introduced this wonderful composer to you. Try these two soulful pieces as well and ponder as to his neglect!

Both very nice pieces as well.

The title of the violin piece is interesting. I have not seen anything called "Introit" outside of a liturgical context. I looked into it a little and found that it was originally the second movement of a violin concerto, the other movements of which were withdrawn. But I could not find the origin of the name it ended up with.

I like the use of a little Baroque flavor in the piano piece. It's very well integrated.

This really stands out among 20th century music, which is usually quite forgettable to me (with a few exceptions, of course).

Last night on Exploring Music Bill McGloughlan aired performances of Frank Bridge's The Sea alongside Benjamin Britten's Sea Interludes, movement by movement to show the influences that Bridge had on Britten. It was an interesting and enjoyable exercise. That probably the first time I've heard anything by Bridge.

Came across this performance of Schubert's "Great" not long ago. Like is so well I've listened to it three times now.

Speaking of English composers, I got a good dose of Walton last week as his music was featured on Exploring Music. Bill McLoughlan mentioned that Walton's music was not performed as much since his passing; is that just a US neglect?
