    Dances WoO13 orchestrated

The dances WoO 13 Beethoven composed for orchestra are available only as piano reductions.

Willem once orchestrated them many years ago. I did now the same with the first 5 dances on the basis of these old midi files by simplifying them a bit and using my tool NotePerformer. How I adore these lovely little gems:

I hope you will like these renditions …

Congratulations! These melodies are really interesting to hear and they acquire a more robust allure once orchestrated compared to the piano version. Great job!

The fourth one (WoO13-4 to be precise) in particular made a special impression on me and I listened to it many times trying to imagine it as part of a Beethoven symphony. What would he have done with this melody and its rythm, one can only speculate. Of the five that you have orchestrated, this one seems to have the most potential as a Beethovenian scherzo. What do you think?

I am glad that these make such an impression on you, Paul! Regarding your question: I would say that this may have been an inspiration for Beehoven for the Finale motiv of his second symphony (also in D-Major). Could this be?

... And as I ponder on this: Isn't Dance #2 in its first 4 bars strikingly similiar to the scherzo from his 1st symphony (only difference: there 1/2 notes intead of 2 equal 1/4 notes)?

My renditions may have too much reverb, should I reduce the hall effect?

I definitely recognize the 1st symphony scherzo in the initial notes of Dance #2. So obvious, I wonder how I missed it the first time.

However, i have to continue working at the resemblance between Dance #4 and the Finale of the 2nd symphony. As I said in a recent post, that symphony does not print very well in my head... Don't know why!

Listening to these orchestral snippets of dances and wondering what Beethoven could have done with them for use in symphonies, I am reminded what I heard often about him; more than any other composers, he could do with a few notes more than others could do with a few bars.

Very enjoyable - will you be doing the complete set?

I've been listening to Schubert's 3rd Symphony (conducted by Sir Colin Davis) and was struck at how the finale reminded me so much of Mendelssohn's 4th symphony finale. It didn't hurt that Sir Colin Davis was conducting; he can do no wrong for me.

I don't know if you can move posts between threads. You can just repost it over in the other thread, if you like.
