fantastic Scherzo for piano WOO 52

Does anyone know this fantastic Scherzo for piano from 1797 ?

Why didn't Beethoven use it in a sonata?

    Yes, this one really moves!

I believe he considered including this or WoO 53 in the sonata Op. 10 No. 1, but eventually he decided on a three-movement sonata without a dance movement. I'm not sure why.

Thanks for that - new to me and I suspect we're hearing quite a bit of later Beethoven from the 1822 revision.

There are a number of bagatelles and shorter piano works, including the above, which never seem to get recorded or played outside of the big three sets: Op. 33, 119 and 126.
Except Fur Elise of course which is done to death.

Here's another one, which Pletnev did manage to include on a single CD - but usually you have to go to complete editions to find it.

My first encounter with WoO 52 and WoO 56 were on this CD of the Beethoven bagatelles by John O'Conor:

The recordings of the usual suspects, Opp. 33, 119, and 126, on this disc are also very good.

Parts of that trio is very reminiscent of his Diabelli variations to my ears.

I could not resist to try an orchestration of this marvelous Scherzo:

Really enjoyed that - doesn't it sound much closer to the world of the 9th symphony scherzo than the 1st symphony?

By now I made an update with an increased tempo to make it a real Presto! What a fantastic Scherzo!!

And here now also in a version as a string quartet: http://gerdprengel.de/Beeth_Woo52_quartet.mp3
