I was wondering if anyone knows if there is some sort of documentation that systematically lists (maybe even in a timeline) Beethoven's health issues and his finances.
I've always been somewhat puzzled by both these areas. His frequent ailments (stomach issues, most of the time) at times did bug him down and stopped him from working.
As for his finances, that is quite complex: I keep reading he was doing well for himself, and elsewhere that he also often had problems money wise. I do understand that among other things, the war situation (particularly around and after 1809) in Vienna played a big role (with the currency being devalued), but a lot of what the actual situation for Beethoven was is still unclear to me. I know it had a major impact on the allowance he got from his benefactors, but he also had other sources of income, such as the sale of his scores and the 'Akademien' (although they were not always a success).
In the several biographies I have read so far, these two areas are touched upon, but not in depth.
Any suggestions for more in depth information on this?
Thanks !
