Speaking of Haydn, I heard the work below just after it had started (I was driving home from work). For the duration I was trying to figure out who the composer was and thought it was Beethoven, but I did not recognize the work. I thought it sounded quite mature and very much like a mature Beethoven work. It surprised me to hear it was by Haydn. Any thoughts?
Joseph Haydn
Piano Sonata in E-flat major, H.XVI:52
Imogen Cooper, piano

Quite nice, I got a chance to listen to the variations. With exception to dynamic differences I thought it well played, very clear to follow. Pedaling was not an issue and the feel for the piece was strong. I can see why this is one of your favorite Haydn piano works.

On Exploring Music last night I heard the final movement of Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony (Serge Koussevitzky with the Boston Symphony Orchestra). That was one of the most exhilarating performances I've ever heard of that work with breath-taking tempi. It was amazing that the orchestra was able to stay together and make the performance work. In my library I have a recording by Sergiu Celibidache which is pretty much the opposite, yet to my ears it also works and I think is a fine performance. It is an interesting contrast.
