Thanks, Michael. Op. 4 & 104 are reworkings of previous works (as is, admittingly, K. 406). I think I'll be listening to the two Mozart piano quartets during today's drive.

BTW op.29 is so op. 18-ish.

Opus 4 is much more than a reworking of the octet - it should be called a re-composition. It's much longer for one thing, and contains themes that do not appear in the original. It always gets overlooked because of that bloody octet which didn't surface until after Beethoven's death.

If you're still looking for Beethoven quintets, there is this little item - but only for very short car journeys.

Opus 104 is an actual arrangement of the C minor piano trio but it wasn't done by Beethoven. However, he did look over it and made some corrections.

          .
Thanks, Michael. I was aware of that Fugue. I do love Mozart's quintets. Even K. 174 is, like the early quartets, a gem.

2 CDs of Mozart Overtures accompanied me today. One conducted by Sir Neville and ASMF and the other conducted by Nikoaus Harnoncourt. Both great!

I'm embarrassed to admit that I know only two or three of Mozart's overtures.
Did the CD include the one Beethoven stole?

Yes thank you for that - a great performance of one of the greatest piano concertos.

Have you guys heard this one? Beethoven always admired Clementi for his sonatas but he also wrote fantastic symphonies.

Thanks Nick, but I'm not alone - Chris and Michael have also been here since the beginning in 2000 and several others as well who don't post quite so regularly. I'm looking forward to my 10,000th post!
