Arvo Pärt, Spiegel im Spiegel.
A very pleasant way of playing around with an F major scale.
What do you think? Melancholic, certainly. Great music? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aS7qmtQLSyY
Melancholic? Yes, I can see that. It is certainly very peaceful, and a great way to get the morning started. It gave me more a feeling of nostalgia, a yearning for a time distant and innocent.
Glenn Gould - Beethoven's 32 Variations in C minor.
Great playing - and the vocals aren't bad either.
Oh - and there's a lovely ad break in the middle!
I caught the end of the Haydn's Symphony No. 94, "Surprise" on the radio on the way to work this morning. A very lively recording by Roy Goodman and the Hanover Band. But of course I can't listen to just the end of the piece and leave it at that, so now I'm listening to the entire thing, and maybe a couple more Haydn symphonies afterward!

That finale of no.94 was the first symphony I heard and I used to play it incessantly as a child, it's so full of life and joy!
Daniil Trifonov - Stravinsky's Danse Infernale from the 'Firebird' - some breathtaking piano
acrobatics here! Especially remarkable as it was an encore after having played the Rachmaninov 3rd piano concerto.
Indeed! It got me on quite a Haydn trip yesterday.
I've said this before but, when it comes to symphonies, I think Haydn is as good as Mozart, if not better.
As somebody once said: "Haydn had the misfortune not to die young or to go deaf."
For consistent quality of composition he rivals most other composers - even, (dare I say it) our "onlie begetter".

His brother's symphonies aren't bad, either.
I was listening to the first movement of the Linz Symphony and quite enjoyed it. Generally, I do prefer Haydn's symphonic output.

I agree. I think Haydn is superior in a few other genres, too - piano trios, string quartets, and masses; though Mozart takes it in concertos, solo piano works, and operas (although I think Haydn's operas are excellent and very underrated).
