    The Spirit of Great Composers

This from The Spectator, which might be of interest; the drinking habits of some great composers. No doubt a consequence of anxiety, loneliness and isolation (the latter with Beethoven), I'm not surprised to read any of this. I feel certain that both Brahms and Beethoven would have lived longer, healthier lives if they'd found "a second self".

Undoubtedly these composers drank far more than we would consider healthy today, but I think this was typical of many people in past centuries, particularly when you consider the quality of the drinking water!
