I was lucky in catching him leading the Academy of St Martin in the Fields on tour in Southern California during the 80s. They played an excellent Prokofiev Classical Symphony and possibly the best Mozart 40th I've ever heard. The orchestra cooked on Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumble Bee. Their Beethoven second wasn't quite of the same caliber. Nothing wrong with it. I just felt it didn't catch fire until almost the very end. Despite that I consider the event one of my most treasured live concert experiences.
