Works you never want to hear again!

Interesting selections here and I can sympathise with some which are probably mainly down to over familiarity and too frequent airings due to the likes of popular Classical radio stations.

One comes to mind I'd rather not listen and switch off when it is played, is -
    Janáček's Sinfonietta!

      Wait, what, Berlioz?

Well, it's certianly better than the lists posted in the comment section. I read Beethoven's 9th, the Grosse Fuge, and the 4th piano concerto. Oh, I just got to the part where someone listed all 9 Mahler symphonies and called them "lazy orchestral programming"... yeah, that's where I stop :P

Edit - Beethoven's string quartets!?! *flips table*

Edit 2 - "The 10 works or composers I like most" *places table upright*

I had his "Glagolitic Mass" on yesterday and I had to give it up after about fifteen minutes. Oddly enough, the Sinfonietta is on the same CD!
Out of curiosity, I'm tempted to play it now.

No doubt you are pleased to see "Fur Elise" in there, Peter!

Beethoven doesn't come out too badly from the various lists - mostly the invective is directed against "The Choral Fantasia" and the "Battle Symphony". I could do well without the last-mentioned but I really like the Fantasia.

More surprising is the inclusion of the beautiful Fourth Piano Concerto.
And why all the hate for Mozart?

I think that a lot of the comments are simply down to the overplay these pieces receive on stations such as Classic FM. When I used to watch TV more the adverts had the same effect for me with pieces such as Air on the G string becoming intolerable! Some of the comments are over the top and ridiculous but you're right, I'd be quite happy not to hear Fur Elise again - let's face it, Beethoven wrote better music than that.

Well, the Battle Symphony and the Fantasia don't get much airplay. Only once have I heard Wellington's Victory played on our national classical radio, Lyric FM. It was played during "Drivetime Classics" and the presenter stopped the CD soon after the percussion started up. He apologised and said he had never heard the piece and didn't realise how strange it was. I suppose he was afraid of causing traffic accidents.

I agree that any of the sets of bagatelles are musically superior to Fur Elise - especially the sublime Opus 126 set. But I have a really soft spot fur Elise - I knew it for years before I became a Beethoven addict and I didn't even know it was by him.
It's a bit of tuneful fun, not intended to be the "Hammerklavier". Maybe it would garner more respect if it was referred to as "WoO 59 in A minor".

                  .

Yes it's not necessarily the piece itself, but consider the poor piano teacher who has had to suffer the lamentable efforts of students who think it's easy (which actually it isn't to play well) and therefore attempt it at far too early a stage with the results that are painfully imprinted on my mind. It's Elise I feel sorry for, especially as she was really Therese!

Beethoven's Choral Fantasy made the harpsichordists list of never wanting to hear again. That's too bad because I love that piece.
