I can't access that article but I can only imagine he means that 18th century pianos are better for playing 18th century music - if so I'm in agreement, but you can't say that an 18th century piano is a 'better' instrument than a 21st century piano. Beethoven himself was in the driving seat for improvements to be made and all composers welcomed new developments. Liszt didn't want his music played on a piano from the 18th century (which would have been impossible anyway) and no 20th century composer opted for a Walter instead of a Steinway.
