    RIP Nicholas Harnoncourt

The great musician and pioneer of early music has died so soon after his retirement, very bad news.

Yes another great name in music leaves us - fortunately he has also left us a wonderful recording legacy and rather timely, in my last post on what are you listening to 4 days ago, it was Harnoncourt conducting the Pastoral symphony and yesterday I was listening to his version of Beethoven's 8th.

More sad news. I am listening to some of his work on YouTube. To my shame, I have none of his recordings on CD. R.I.P.

          RIP

He was a great musician. I have many of his recordings. I even have his performances of the Bach Suites for solo cello.

Yes I don't think many people know he was also a fine 'cellist and played with the Wiener Symphoniker before he became a conductor.

Sad news indeed, for he was a great Beethovenian. Its fitting that his last recording was the 4th & 5th symphonies.

I think his recording of Beethoven's Creatures of Prometheus is perhaps the finest recording of this work, and it is a treasured piece of my CD collection.
