    Schubert's birthday!

Guys, I just wanted to warn you that today (Sunday, 31st January) is Schubert's 219th birthday and I thought it would be nice to pay him some attention.
BTW is there any evidence of contact among Schubert and Beethoven? I know for piano duet anecdote, but is it real? And did Schubert really visit Ludwig on his deathbed? It would be nice to hear

Schubert definitely knew of B's music. He paraphrased the 9th symphony in his own Great C major symphony.

I know Schubert was a pallbearer at Beethoven's funeral. And also that before they were moved from their original resting places, both of them were buried beside each other. After the transfer in the central cemetery in Vienna, it was decided to leave the original funeral monuments in the former place. You can still see them today. The place is now a dog run!

I think there is truth to these anecdotes. Beethoven was certainly aware of Schubert as there is a reference to him by his nephew in the conversation books.

So, Karl knew for Schubert too. Did he have contact with him? I'm just wondering

Highly unlikely - Karl was simply reporting to Beethoven the rumours concerning Schubert's health. I think the entry was along these lines 'it's said he hides himself away'. This was due to the Mercury treatment Schubert was receiving for syphilis.
