Music for orchestras

Hi, my son has a homework question that asks 'Discuss how Beethoven changed the way music was written for the orchestra'. I appreciate he was instrumental in in the transition from classical to the romantic period but can't find anything specific about music for orchestra. Any help would be much appreciated!
