Johann Sebastian Bach's majestic Cello Suites are among the world's best-loved pieces of music - but did another Bach write them? Australian musical sleuth Martin Jarvis explosively claims the suites were composed not by Bach, but by his much-loved second wife, Anna Magdalena.

This is another program denied me, unless it also appears on YouTube. For those who can view it, what do you think? Regardless of who ends up getting the credit, those cello suites are on my short list of favorite compositions.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, reading this reminds me of a long ago discussion on the now defunct (?) Mozart Forum (or was it here?) in which someone strenuously claimed that the bulk of Mozart's compositions were actually written by some Italian gentleman whose name now escapes me. As I remember it, the whole conversation was rather far fetched and preposterous. Does anyone else recall this? (It was long before your time, AH.)

I like the cello suites also, they are excellent.

There was a bit of that discussion here with the very person making the claim. As for the Bach Cello Suites I would determine if they are in J. S. Bach's style. What do we know about Anna's compositional capabilities? Could she have composed them?

Oh yes there will be quite a few members here who recall it Decrepit, the person concerned was a member of both the Mozart forum (also sorry to hear of its demise) and this one and the Italian you refer to was Luchesi who was Kappelmeister at Bonn. Yes the theory was as preposterous as the idea that Bach's wife wrote the 'cello suites!

I can't believe that someone other than Bach wrote those suites. Also, how else could you explain the fact that the 5th suite (in C minor) is exactly the same as the lute suite in G minor (BWV 995)? The later can be found in Bach's own writing.
