    The 5th

    My favourite.

But still full of riddles. Reading "The First Four Notes" by Guerrieri, one of the many things I come across is the story (?) of the link between Beethoven and Cherubini.

Probably many of you already heard about Gardiner (another favourite) talking on this subject (I actually witnessed him doing so at a concert at the Barbican, when he was still Chief Conductor at the LSO, yet another favourite).

    Here's a link
    http://www.gramophone.co.uk/feature/...w.google.be%2F

I now am trying to find a link to the music of the Hymne du Panthéon, which is what all this is about.... can't find it on YouTube, nor anywhere else so far. Help?

    Dear Megan,

No, that's not the one, obviously, as it is the 9th (the European Hymn version of it) that is being performed there. The piece I am looking for is is called Hymne du Panthéon. (Not sure about your French, but that means Hymn of the Panthéon.) This is a performance at the Panthéon in Paris.

Do you perchance refer to this work? The year is slightly off (1794 / 96) as is, obviously the name. Too, I don't notice a connection with the fifth. Maybe I don't know what to look for?

Ok, thanks for the correction Albert.

          Hi Decrepit Peter,

Again, no, that's not the one, it is indeed another hymn, as I explained to Megan. It does look as if that is not an easy one to find...

This one is really elusive. I can't find anywhere to purchase it, and the only CD version I can find of it is the Musique & Révolution Musifrance by the Orchestre d’Harmonie des Gardiens de la Paix de, which is only available (of which I can find) in libraries scattered across the globe. Unless someone comes up trumps, I think we're out of luck. I can't even find a score of it without paying an exorbitant price.

No, Hal, again that is a Hymn AT the Panthéon, not the Hymne du Panthéon. I find it strange that reference is made to this, and no-one seems to actually have it.... nor is it available. In the world we live in, this is nearly incredible !

I think it is part of a 3CD set recorded in the Église Notre-Dame du Liban with the Choeur de l'Armée française conducted Claude Pichaureau - possibly it's on this cd:
