I've just remembered a similar novel that I read about ten years ago by a much more famous writer, Anne Rice of "Interview with the Vampire" fame. Another horrible mishmash that features the ghost of Beethoven!

The Wikipedia link doesn't seem to work here but this one gives a synopsis:

    http://www.minstrel.org.uk/papers/bo...s/ARViolin.htm

However, that review would give you the misleading impression that the book is not too bad. It is. Very bad.

The synopsis doesn't make it sound bad at all- actually quite intriguing, but an idea can be good, and the writing style torrid, cliched etc, you know?
The prose needs to be elegant, no anachronisms, subtlety of plot, rounded characters etc.

The whole novel seems to be available free on line:

        http://worldtracker.org/media/librar...-%20Violin.pdf

Glancing at it again, the writing isn't that bad but the plot .....! If you can get a page or two into Chapter One, there are quite a few references to our patron saint. Later on, he appears in person ..... or rather his ghost does ....................

        Read at your peril.

It takes ages to load and then my laptop froze! What page does our Maestro appear on Michael?

I hope she hasn't made him into some menacing vampire type...

And not very original calling the protagonist's dead boyfriend Karl...

I just found the plot synopsis. Doesn't sound that bad to me.

But then after that wacko Kenton maybe anything else would seem better!

I don't know - I'd have to read it all again and I have no intention of doing so.
If you could get a page or two into the first chapter there are several paragraphs about the Ninth Symphony.
