They're not very good busts. The one next to the mask is Mozart....looks nothing like him. I even said it to the shop assistant. She looked at me with this dumb blank look on he face, saying "oh it is Mozart, it has his name written on it"....lol. The bust in the middle is Beethoven, and the last bust is Chopin...this bust resembles him a little.

I just received a Beethoven symphony set (all 9) that I ordered for 25 cents off Amazon. What came is the same set but a different and wonderful package that folds out to five squares, each one holding a disc and having a writeup printed on it. Below are the beautifully illustrated discs and some of the case. I had no idea it would be this wonferful as the depicted case on Amazon was a plain looking box. Here it is, the discs, the covers, and part of the inside:

25 cents?! Wow what a bargain for such a beautifully presented set! Who are the orchestras and conductors?

I like the order of symphonies on this set. You start off jumping in with both feet (Da Da Da Daaah). Also each disc begins with one of the more popular works and ends with one of the less popular. This set can still be had for under $2 used on Amazon. You will see my cover under Customer Images down by the comments.

I got some awesome bargains from Oxfam this week! They are LPS that are inside a magazine with a cardboard cover, dating from the 1960s, called The Great Musicians (£1.99 each). I got 4 Beethoven ones and one Haydn one. They have tons of them there, of loads of other composers as well. There are a few more Beethoven ones to collect- I got the most interesting ones he he. They cost a fair bit in the 1960s- 3 months (12 issues) were £8 7s. Whoever bought them back then obviously cherished them, as they are in mint condition- the magazines and LPS. Each magazine focuses on an era, life, music of the composer, with great photos and prints of places and the composers, and facsimilies of scores etc. The articles are well written and include a bibliography- Thayer, Sulivan, Tovey etc.
I will have to take some photos to post of them. The magazines are very big ( bigger than A4, but not quite A3) not sure they will fit on the scanner without damaging the spine.

Well I didn't get mine from e-bay! I got them from Oxfam charity shop in my hometown! But I did order this book from Amazon last week:

She is not your stereotypical American hairdresser, but a woman of refined tastes. We like her very much. Last year I gave her Handel's Messiah. I should say we, as it was a gift from my family, not just me.

I am all for minimizing chemicals used on the hair/skin. The skin does absorb that stuff to some degree.

Hey, I just gave away another Beethoven symphony cycle, Bruno Walter, to Rocco. He only had one cycle, so I figured he needed it. Should make a good contrast to his 1980s Karajan cycle that he got that for $2.50 at a garage sale--can you beat that!

In fact, the Walter cycle cost me $6 at a garage sale and I see it going for $30 - 40 on Amazon and Ebay.

I love that my Hanover Band cycle + overtures + Missa Solemnis was only $2.98 (+ shipping of course).

I started collecting these in the late sixties. The series ran to over a hundred "magazines" and came out fortnightly. I intended to collect the lot but ran out of money in a few weeks. When the series came to an end, I was able to order all twelve of the issues devoted to Beethoven and I still have them.

The vinyl records were, unusually, ten inch long players which caused some problems in fitting certain works onto both sides. The first time I heard the "Waldstein" was on one of these discs and the final rondo was split in two . To this day, I still feel the urge to get up and turn the record over at a certain point in the sonata!
Despite these limitations, the series was very good and covered a large amount of composers. I still have some of the Bach, Mozart and Haydn issues.

The Beethoven section of the series was edited by Robert Simpson, the composer and Beethoven scholar. I had the pleasure of meeting him about thirty years later and was able to tell him how this series increased my interest in classical music.

The item on eBay seems to be going for a good price but I think I'll hold on to my collection, for old times' sake!

Interesting post, thanks Michael! Well Oxfam has beat e-bay in price! £1.99 for each LP/magazine! Yes, that is the downside of LPS- not fitting the whole piece on one side, but they have that vintage charm.
I haven't listened to mine yet as I haven't got a record player!
I plan to get one in the near future. I've got some other Beethoven and Classical LPs waiting to be played.
