Beethoven's Ninth (what recordings do you have)

This is pretty obsessive, but this is what I amassed over the last few years.
Favorite is Fricsay 1958. There are 4 or 5 listed that I haven't really listened to yet.

Szell 1961 and Zinman 1994. I also have Scherbakov and Katsaris playing the Liszt transcription.

I have about 6 versions which are on your list and like you my favourite is Fricsay. This was one of the first classical LPs I bought when I was about 13, but in those days I didn't look after my collection very well (typical messy teenager I'm afraid!), so I was delighted when you told me it was available on cd. I ordered it and it arrived last week and was just as I remembered it, superb and the best of my 9ths!

If anyone had asked me, I would have said offhand that I have about six or seven. But when I went to check, I found I had almost twice that number:

              Busch (1950)
              Furtwangler
              Karajan 1963
              Karajan 1984
              Kurt Masur
              Karl Bohm
              Ernest Ansermet
              Eugene Ormandy
              George Szell
              Gunter Wand
              Leonard Bernstein
              Jos van Immerseel
              Eugen Duvier

(And I'm sure I have a few more lurking around somewhere)

Nice sets of Ninths Hal9000 and Michael!

The Ninth was my first ever classical vocal work. I bought my first Ninth on vinyl about 34 years ago. It was the only classical vocal work I would listen to until I learned of Handel's Messiah a few years later. No further vocal works until just a couple years ago.

My vinyl Ninth was Fricsay but apparently a budget edition because it split the third movement over both sides of the disc. The better edition came with two discs and is represented by the CD edition.

Yes and it was the two LP set mentioned below by Harvey - I thoroughly recommend getting this on cd.

Well I just got my 33rd Ninth! Thanks to Rocco going to the library used book sale and finding a copy of Mehta 1983 Beethoven Ninth in great condition for $2 USD.

I have got 3 CDS of the Ninth:

Von Karajan conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker ( bought today for 50p!)

                            Nicolaus Esterhazy Sinfonia, 1997

Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Peter Maag, conductor, 1994 ( bought today for 50p!)

I am listening to the Karajan one right now- seems to be played much more slowly than I have heard on other recordings. Well, it is noticeable on the second movement!
