What a pity Beethoven did not wrote himself his biographie.... but what a good thing he wrote music to his end ! (He was also famed for his permanent (natural) sun-tan and his whtite teeth.

Just as well he didn't as it would have taken up valuable composing time!

If not, dear Joy, you will simply have to move to the UK. Or else be forever deprived of the intellectual pursuit that is Des!!

Well, if that's the only way. Surely I wouldn't want to be deprived!!

He has had polio since he was very young. He sits on a chair on stage while playing his violin. I have seen him on TV and he was conducting from his chair as well. He does use crutches to get about.

Whilst on the subject of afflicted musicians please spare a thought for Dudley Moore whose degenerative brain disorder has now reduced a great comic, pianist and B fan (his rendition of the Moonlight sonata got me into Beethoven many years back) to a state being almost totally senile and incapable of anything.

                    Indeed, quite tragic.

I agree. I have a video of him introducing Beethoven's Piano Concerto #1 from years back and he plays part of it himself plus talks quite a bit about Beethoven and his music. He did play beautifully. You know I believe he even played at Carnegie Hall among other places. Then I saw him recently on a news show and it is very sad indeed as he still has his faculties but his motor skills are deteroriated.

He recently received a medal from the queen sitting in a wheelchair. He looked totally out of it, a zombie. Considering the many wretches that receive honours from the queen a nice guy like Moore should have been given a bucket full years ago. Although if it was me I'd tell her where she can stick her worthless medal - hope you're reading this Liz!

Poor Dudley might have been 'out of it' because of all the medication as well!
But I agree with you about the medal giving,
                            Rod.

It may have been his merciless (but hilarious) attack on HM's mother, as half of Derek and Clive, that delayed the award. Forensic laboratories and all that.....

                              PS. Liz sends her love.
