Right now I am working on the quartett op. 135 and loved it never more than I do now:

Doesn't this Lento just cry out for an orchestral expression?

Indeed - it always reminds me of the 5th movt of Mahler's 3rd - he must have been influenced by it.

yes, that's what I also always felt, and this movement is certainly Mahler's greatest achievement, maybe the most beautiful Adagio of the Romantic music (together with Bruckner's 8th and Dvorak's 9th)
