    WETA Radio Classical Countdown

    Every year, radio station WETA polls listeners for their favorites, and plays the top 90 during Thanksgiving week. Beethoven's Symphony 9 always comes in first. This year was no exception. Beethoven came in at
    #1 - Symphony 9;
    #3 - Symphony 6;
    #7 - Symphony 7;
    #9 - Piano Concerto 5;
    #11 - Symphony 5;
    #20 - Violin Concerto;
    #23 - Symphony 3;
    #29 - Moonlight Sonata;
    #41 - Triple Concerto;
    #80 - Piano Concerto 3;
    #89 - Piano Sonata 21 (Waldstein);
    and #90 = Piano Concerto #4.
    Not a bad set.

    The only piece of the ninety that sounded unfamiliar to me was Richard Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto, and I liked it.

    #2
    Great result (thanks to my vote! )
    The "Warsaw Concerto" is not a real concerto but a piece of film music. I think the film was "Dangerous Moonlight" and the main character was a concert pianist and this mock concerto was composed (by Richard Addinsell) for him to play. A similar movie piece is "The Legend of the Glass Mountain" from the same era (around the 1940s).

      Thanks for the info and for your vote. I wonder if they noticed that you are a WETA "fan" from Ireland. I've been listening for decades, even before they changed their call letters from WGMS to WETA, and for as long as I can remember, #2 was always Dvorak's New World Symphony, and #1 was always Beethoven's #9.
