    Ravel on Debussy.

According to Arbie Orenstein (Ravel: Man and Musician, New York, 1991), Ravel, who criticized Debussy sometimes, particularly regarding his orchestration, once said, "If I had the time, I would reorchestrate La mer." A rather bold remark, I'd say.

It would be interesting to see what Ravel would have done with La Mer. He did a great job with Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, but personally I prefer Stowkowski's version of that.

For me, the best version is Mussorgsky's own. I'm listenning to Stokowsky's transcription right now, for the first time maybe, though.

All too often we forget the work was for piano. I agree with you on that one, as well. The orchestrations are interesting, but we really need to hear it the way it was composed to get the full effect.

Pictures at an Exhibition, for piano, was the first score I ever saw. I bought it, and still have it, though I didn't know anything about music, reading or playing. Just to see how the music was written.
