    openclassical.com - version 2.1! Looking for feedback

    Hi all.

Late last year I posted here about the launch of a new internet project, www.openclassical.com. Many of you shared your thoughts (on the forum and by email), which was extremely helpful.

We have continued to work hard on the site since then, and would like to announce the launch of a new version. Once again, we are looking for feedback.

Here is a link to the updated Beethoven page, a great place to start:

    https://www.openclassical.com/compos..._van_Beethoven

I will mention a few highlights of the new build.

    * each composer now has a 'Top 10' landing page. This aims to be much more user friendly than the previous version. It also shows a first-time visitor the music they are most likely to enjoy listening to (if they are unfamiliar with the composer).

    * our YouTube matching logic has been beefed up significantly. We now have code that queries YouTube for relevant movies, then applies matching logic on these results to the piece at hand, then sorts the results. As a final step, if our code can determine complete performances are present for longer works, these results are pushed to the top. For example, on openclassical we present nearly 100 complete performances of Beethoven's 5th before the other results! As a musician myself, I think this is really cool.

    * the layout has been changed a lot. We would like to hear what you think on this point.

Caveats abound - it's still a relatively new project! Not every composer has a Top 10 just yet, but we are adding to this every day and this aspect of the site will be completed in the near future. With respect to this, many important composers are currently hidden as 'minor' composers, but this is very temporary.

Thanks again. Please also feel free to PM me or contact me directly via the contact page on the site if you prefer.

One thought I had, it would be nice to pick one from each major genre such as one symphony, a quartet, or an overture. It is looking good! A couple of composers that came to mind, in looking at the main page, Josquin for Renaissance and Telemann for Baroque. Of course there are many others but these came to mind at the time.

      Thanks Sorrano for the comments!

All major composers will have Top 10 lists in the coming months, something I am personally excited about.

In case you didn't know, we have built Genre filters at the composer level, so for example on Beethoven's All Works page:

      https://www.openclassical.com/compos...ven/all_works/

we provide a text filter (to quickly search on the title of a work), and Genre / Sub-Genre / Sub-Sub-Genre filters below that. Also, on each work's page, you can click on the Genre details to go straight to All Works with the filter applied. For example, if viewing a Piano Trio such as the Archduke Opus 97:

      https://www.openclassical.com/compos...o_Trio_Opus_97

you can then directly view all of Beethoven's Chamber works, or more specifically the Piano Trios.

This feature is available for all composers, although at the present time only Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and a few others really have complete works listed. We're juggling the two aspects of the project right now - building the tech to make this possible, and also entering the data!
