Just back from a Beethoven mini-festival in Galway. There were three recitals over the weekend, the first on Friday 25th Jan (which happened to be my birthday).
It was a tribute to Emily Anderson who was born in Galway and famously translated Mozart's and Beethoven's letters, so it was a rather unusual programme. The Osiris piano trio played the Archduke and the Ghost and we were also treated to the bagatelles, a good selection of rarely-heard songs (which included "An die ferne Geliebte") and, of course, a selection from the Irish songs arranged by B.
An unusual feature at two of the recitals was a selection of Beethoven's letters read by an actor made up to look like the man himself. All in all, except for the weather, a hugely enjoyable birthday weekend.
I forgot to mention that I had a chat with Ellen Corver of the Osiris Trio after one of the recitals because I was intrigued by a recording they had made of a Beethoven Piano Trio Opus 63 which I had never heard of.
She told me it was a reconstruction from Beethoven's sketches but on checking it later, I found that Opus 63 is an arrangement for piano trio of the String Quintet Opus 4 (which is itself a recomposition of the Wind Octet Opus 104) so I am as wise as ever!
