    Beethoven Weekend

Just back from a Beethoven mini-festival in Galway. There were three recitals over the weekend, the first on Friday 25th Jan (which happened to be my birthday).

It was a tribute to Emily Anderson who was born in Galway and famously translated Mozart's and Beethoven's letters, so it was a rather unusual programme. The Osiris piano trio played the Archduke and the Ghost and we were also treated to the bagatelles, a good selection of rarely-heard songs (which included "An die ferne Geliebte") and, of course, a selection from the Irish songs arranged by B.

An unusual feature at two of the recitals was a selection of Beethoven's letters read by an actor made up to look like the man himself. All in all, except for the weather, a hugely enjoyable birthday weekend.

I forgot to mention that I had a chat with Ellen Corver of the Osiris Trio after one of the recitals because I was intrigued by a recording they had made of a Beethoven Piano Trio Opus 63 which I had never heard of.
She told me it was a reconstruction from Beethoven's sketches but on checking it later, I found that Opus 63 is an arrangement for piano trio of the String Quintet Opus 4 (which is itself a recomposition of the Wind Octet Opus 104) so I am as wise as ever!

Lucky you, Michael. Out of the loop missed hearing about that weekend till last night!

Once had the paperback of Beethoven's Collected letters. Our daughter in the UK has it now. some are hilarious.

John Suchet is on twitter. Just contacted/followed him.

Will the show travel to Dublin do you think?

Thanks,Chris. The programme also included - of all things - Beethoven's "Erlkonig" (one of the few reconstructions that I actually like).

I don't think this recital will travel to the capitol, Maurice, as it was a uniquely Galway event. I never knew until now that Emily Anderson was born in Galway. I lived there for most of a year in my teens but my favourite composers then were Lennon and McCartney!

Yes .... I meant Opus 103. Opus 104 is another string arrangement of Opus One No. 3 .....
The thing is that none of these bloody arrangements were done by Beethoven himself (except Opus 4 - and he did give his blessing to Opus 104 - which must count for something).

                          Thanks for the birthday wishes.

How did you know it was my Fifth?
