    Bruckner 8

There is a superb 1979 live performance at St.Florian of what I regard as Bruckner's greatest symphony on youtube with Karajan/VPO - does anyone know if the dvd is available? I've checked Amazon but no joy. I have a cd of Karajan's 1988 version which is also very fine.

I'm afraid I misread (and later forgot!) your posting, Blue Baron. The DVD I have is of Boulez in St Florian's with the Vienna Phil. You could purchase the Boulez version and put a sticker on the DVD jacket and write in 'Karajan'.
Or, on the other hand, you could consult the excellent Abruckner.com website where I'm pretty sure you'll find what you want!

Thanks Don Q - I may have to settle for the Boulez but from what I've read it isn't quite as fine as the Karajan - apparently he was allowed to spend time below in the crypt alone with the master before the performance which explains the extraordinary mystical effect created!!

I'll check out the website and see what they suggest.

Let me tell you Blue Baron that I have also paid homage in the crypt before Anton Master. The fact that I then went on to eat in majestic fashion a Wiener Schnitzel in some local eatery is neither here nor there. I do not know who is the better Schnitzel guzzler, but I do suspect Boulez has the better ear.

I will not talk of Karajan 'trickery' in some EMI recording I have of the IVth.

Thanks Preston - First time I've been on the forum since before Xmas and I meant to post that I've also found it on Amazon.co.uk - the price is putting me off a bit and I really only want that recording of the 8th rather than the other works (which I already have in other versions) - I'll have to think about it.

Check the "Used" prices. They are a bit less than the Amazon price, but nevertheless a bit much.

Well, in an EMI recording I have of Herbert von K playing Bruckner's 4th (Berlin Phil / 70s recording) he retranscribes several bars of the the Violin 1 parts up an octave which is in neither Haas or Nowak editions ! Very naughty, I must say.
[But effective, you forgot to add. Ed.]

And very few people would have been any the wiser.

I'm not at all sure that is so, Sorrrano! I only noticed this passage (tampered with by Herbert von K) after having heard Boehm / Dresden (spelling?) and Barenboim / Berlin Phil versions. It is a key passage in the first movement, it's all going full-throttle, double ff and so on ...
The thing is, whilst I normally deplore such tampering, Karajan's intervention really makes for a more exciting moment, as the first violins' altered up-an-octave passage brings out the line to exciting effect.
I'm afraid I can't access the score to give you precise bar numbers and CD reference (I'm in the Black Forest cut off from all civilization, only schnapps to live on...), but I'll certainly do so when I get back. And after I have corrected your efforts at counterpoint.
Your teacher Albrechtsberger (or whatever his name was),

Peter, I can tell you how to transfer the youtube video into an mp3 file and then to a CD if you wish.
